Daphne, great to see the pics of you trip.... interesting to see the sea so calm, and all the brilliant different shades of blue.  Bet it was awe-inspiring and unforgettable.

Did you feel you wanted to go trekking on it?  That is a bit too adventurous for me!!

Hi Jami, long time no see!!
to answer your question; no, they don't build on glaciers!! The town of Calafate, a small , low town is on the shores of the huge lake where these two glaciers feed into, but is actually some 50 miles from them both by road as across the water, and there is a new law out stating that the area must not be exploited, either for mining, fishing, water sports, hotel complex or any other industry, as this is one of the few uncontaminated water systems left on the planet. All tours are taken on the "official" launches or buses, the launches don't go any closer than about half a mile to the glaciers and slow down long before that. Trecking over them is limited to small groups at a time, and has a brief season starting in August, - well into winter when there is less danger of huge chunks breaking off. There is a relatively narrow strip on the lake that is full of icebergs in all shapes and sizes, bits that have already broken away from the glaciers. The town of Calafate, home of our actual president, seems only to exist due to the natural phenonimum of the glaciers, hotels, restaurantes, travel agents, excursion agents, National Park keepers and tour guides. In the winter months, vehicles that are allowed into the park have to have chains on the wheels due to the climatic variations, and every person visiting has to pay a set fee which varied from 4 pesos ( about a dollar)  students of the province, to 60 pesos ( nearly 20 dollars) for tourists from other countries. We got in for 20 pesos as residents of the country. Go figure, foreign tourists have to pay 3 times as much!!!!
There is supposed to be trout and salmon in the provincial rivers, but the price in restaurants was prohibitive, and we only tried local lamb once, though that is supposed to be THE local dish, not that we saw any sheep at all in our brief visit.

Talk to you soon,
 Daphne

Ok Here are afew of the best pictures from my recent trip:

Outside our hotel on the first night as it snowed soon after our arrival. It snowed, it froze, it snowed some more making getting about treacherous, then in the same 24 hours it thawed leaving frozen puddles everywhere

One of the many icebergs floating on the lake.

Upsala Glacier

Upsala Glacier at 300 metres. Its some 90 metres high, the boats go in very slowly never cñoser than this, then back off sideways, so as not to cause too much vibration

Perito Moreno Glacier, the largest in the world, around 60 meters high, about 5 km front and I dont remember how far back it stretches. But bits break off continually and form new icebergs in the lake.
At one time while on the boat, the cabin crew passed us with a few empty icebuckets, then announced we could have our drinks with ice straight from the source! We visited this one from the road, from the lake and from a footpath. Trecking over it only starts in August.

The only alternative I can come up with to see all my holiday pictures is this one; https://cid-ae8277bb862be027.skydrive.live.com/play.aspx/Calafate%202009?ref=1
failing that, I'll pick out the best half dozen and post on here tomorrow.

I can't get in chat today as I have a class before dance group time, and tomorrow I'll be catching up with my sis - the new gran- at regular chat time.

Jan I still have about 60 copies of my little book printed out, I just need to redo the covers for them. We also have a CD version which has "book 2"

Hi, if that other link to see my holiday photos doesn't work for you, try   http://daphnelunda.spaces.live.com/     and the album Calafate 2009.

Yes Jan I did get to vote. I went back yet again to the town hall to enquier where, and yet again they couldn't find my name, but sent me to two possible places where I should be/could be voting. With the help of whatever military were on duty on the door I found my name way down the bottom, second to last on a list.

Thanks for the wonderful news on your trip Daphne and so glad to hear that you had such a wonderful time.  I can not wait to see the pictures.

What a beautiful name for the new arrival into your family ...... Kaci May.  Congratulations to the new Great Auntie and Uncle and of course to your sister, the proud new grandma.

I had Kadynce since mid Friday morning and we had such a wonderful couple of days.  Friday was spent here at my home but Saturday we hit the garage sales and found all sorts of interesting treasures for her including a wooden rocking cow -- or at least it looks like a cow to me.  I must take a picture to see what you think.

Welcome home ... I am sure no one is more happy that you are back than Skippy!

Love,

Sharon

Hi!, I'm back home now, we got back Thursday eve but the computer was still on holiday till today, we got that back without them being able to find what was wrong (keeps stopping and restarting by itself) Picked up the dog from the care centre too, we had a good time, but apparently HE didn't, though he is settling back down now, poor boy.
The views where we went were absolutely spectacular, the hotel was in a small, low city where the prices of everything were BIG and TALL, and if it wasn't for taking advantage of a natural phenomenon -glaciers - that town would have no reason to exist. Still, it was worth it and we had a good time, but boy was it cold there! in the 1st 24 hours it snowed, it froze, it snowed some more, making walking around trecherous, and vehicles had to use chains with in the glacier park. Then it all thawed! and the freezing wind never stopped blowing.
I'll send in some pictures as soon as I get them downloaded and organized.
And as for what we'll be doing over the weekend, well tomorrow (Sunday) is voting day, for the first time sonce being here, I have been unable to find out where I am supposed to vote, though I have voted before, and my son has to be on table duty all day and since Leo votes at the same place as him, he'll stop by and leave him a lunch.

Another piece of news in my family, my middle sister has just become a grandmother for the 1st time, a healthy little girl called Kaci May, whose Dad and Mum are proudly bursting!!!!! there were photos waiting for me on my return home.

What is everyone doing this weekend?

We are going to Grafton about 100kms away for a workshop and concert, but first we are getting ready to go and do a concert at an Aged Care in Lismore this morning.

We've had a big week this week, a lot on, in fact we ate at the club three times this week.
